3 Words for 2019

It's that time of year again. Time for me to share with you my 3 words for the new year. If you're new here or maybe it's been a while, I started doing the 3 word exercise in 2016 instead of a new year's resolution and as I was preparing to write this post I was looking back in the archives for my 3 words for 2018 and I couldn't find them. I found the post for 2017, but where was 2018?

No where.

Because I didn't choose any. The entire year had gone by and I had forgotten that I never even chose my 3 words. Perhaps that is why this year has felt very unfocused and a bit chaotic. Now admittedly, that was a lot going on at Knead to Run this year. We added our Portsmouth location in March, we gained and lost and gained again some great team members and I've taken on a bigger role as business owner working ON the business vs. technician working IN the business.

Change is always difficult to navigate which is why I find this 3 word exercise brings me so much focus. So much so that it was one of my words for 2017. Without something to focus on you lose sight of where you're going, like driving without GPS.

My 3 words for this year are

  • Collaboration

  • Basics

  • Profit

Collaboration - Because things are always better with friends. I have had the pleasure of collaborating with some fantastic people over the past year. On our podcast, I collaborated with many friend and colleagues and they are some of my favorite episodes. I also find that collaborating with other health care practice owners (PTs, Chiros, etc) is a great way to expand my base of knowledge, get a different perspective on treatments and build relationships and friendships with like-minded people.

One of the many collaborations already in the works for 2019 is with the Exeter Run Club.

We're collaborating on a foam rolling clinic this month. Want more information? Join our email list to be notified about this and future clinics.

Basics - We all suffer from "shiny object syndrome" from time to time. Shiny objects can be great every once in a while, but the problem with them is that they distract you from doing the things that got you to where you are as well as you can. That's why we're putting on the blinders and taking everything back to basics. Making sure that every part of your experience with us is on point.

Over the next year we're going to take out the microscope and examine every part of our operation to see what are we doing well and keep doing it. We're also going to look at what do we need to improve and make it better. More importantly, we're going to look at what isn't working for us, for you and eliminate it....shiny objects.

Profit - Two things I have most definitely learned about business is that just because you own a business doesn't mean you are making a profit, especially in the first several years.

When I started as a massage therapist, to say I knew nothing about running a business is an understatement. Over the last 13 years I have learned a lot, but learning can be a very expensive mistake as you figure out what works, what doesn't. I feel like 2018 was a lot about working out the "rest of the kinks" and 2019 is about refinement. About taking the cumulative knowledge and putting it to good use.

And we're told not supposed to talk about money. Ever.

Money is a taboo subject, like a shameful secret that we all acknowledge, but no one ever talks about. I could write an entire blog post about this topic alone, but then we'd be getting off topic.

The ultimate goal of a business is to be profitable and a profitable business isn't a terrible thing. Profit means stability, longevity and it means the business can serve more people as it grows, expands and gets better. More importantly, as a small business, profitability means that every time you get a massage or refer someone to us, you're supporting a family in your community, my family. You're helping to support your neighbors and friends that are employed here and you're helping your runner friends keep running for miles and miles.

Do you have 3 words for 2019? If so, I want to know what they are. Post your 3 words on our Facebook page and join the conversation.

Here's to an awesome 2019!
