3 Words for 2022
Since 2016 I have been participating in the 3 words exercise. If you're new here and don't know what I'm talking about, the 3 words exercise was created by marketer, author and speaker Chris Brogan and it's an alternative to new year's resolutions. Instead of choosing a lofty and unattainable goal, I choose 3 words that act as my guiding principles for the next year and write a blog post about why I chose those particular words.
I usually revisit my 3 words from the previous year, and examine how I did, but 2021 being the dumpster fire it was I did not choose any words. Looking back, I wonder if not choosing 3 words for 2021 was part of the reason I felt aimless and adrift much of the time. So I'm picking up where I left off with my 3 words for 2022.
Persistence, Prioritize and Play
Persistence - If there's one word that would describe me it would be persistent. Some call it stubborn or thick-headed, but my persistence has always been the thing that has allowed me to reach whatever goal I set in front of me...eventually. Even when I am consistently inconsistent with my actions, it is my persistence that keeps me going. I feel like many times over the past year I've forgotten how much my persistence has moved the needle and I want to focus on reminding myself of that.
Prioritize - I definitely need to reexamine what I see as a priority in my life. I've always been good at making excuses for why I don't make myself and my needs a priority. I love the idea of something like a regular bedtime routine but when push comes to shove I end up staying up too late and then paying the consequences the next day. I want to move my true priorities out of the fantasy world of "tomorrow I will" or "someday I will" and into the real world.
Play - I realized the other day that I don't actually have any hobbies or things I do for fun. My sister, one year, made fun of my for taking a book on social media marketing with me on vacation as "fun reading." I chose this word as a reminder not necessarily to pick up a particular hobby but to take time out of work or chores and responsibilities and just have fun from time to time.
So there you have it, my 3 words for 2022. I can't wait to see how the year unfolds and how I do with my words.
